Abstract Objective To investigate the effect of carotid atherosclerosis on renal atherosclerosis in rabbits and its possible mechanism. Methods 16 male Japanese white rabbits were randomly divided into operation group with carotid artery injured by air- drying and sham operation group (control group) and fed high cholesterol chow. Blood creatinine and angiotensin II were measured before and 8 weeks after operation. The rabbits were executed and prepared for pathologi-cal examination. The intima- media thickness(I/M ratio) of carotid and renal arteries was measured and compared between two groups. Results Blood angiotensin II was significantly higher in operation group[(43.23±0.12)pg/ml] than in con-trol group [(37.02±0.42)pg / ml](P<0.05).There was no difference of creatinine between two groups. The I / M ratio of carotid artery as wel as renal artery was significantly higher in operation group (1.28±0.08, 0.45±0.11) than in control group (0.04±0.02, 0.12±0.04)(P<0.01or0.05). Conclusion The development of carotid atherosclerosis aggravates re-nal atherosclerosis. Activation of renin- angiotensin system may be one of the mechanisms for such a change.
