Abstract Objective To study the effects of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) on collagen synthesis of bal oon- injured rat carotid arteries and its mechanisms. Methods SD rats were divided into sham operation group, model group and TMP group. Carotid arteries were injured by bal oon in the last two groups. Rats were treated with TMP (10mg/kg·d) in TMP group or saline solution in model group via the caudal vein for 1 week before and for other 6 weeks after bal oon angio-plasty. Injury segments of carotid artery were harvested in sixth week and assessed by picrosirius red staining. Western blot was used to detect related protein expression. Results Col agen volume fraction (CVF) of intima increased signifi-cantly in model group than in sham operation group (P<0.05)and TMP group (P<0.05) at sixth week after carotid injured. Expression of Wnt4, Dvl- 1,β- catenin and CyclinD1 in injured arteries increased significantly in model group and reduced in TMP group compared with sham operation group. Expression of Col- 1 and Col- 3 were significantly higher in model group than TMP group (P<0.05). Conclusion TMP can inhibit col agen synthesis of bal oon- injured carotid artery, pos-sibly through down- regulation of wnt signal pathway.
