Abstract Objective To compare the effects of ventricular rate control and sinus rhythm restoration on short-term quality of life(QOL) in patients with atrial fibril ation(AF). Methods 134 patients with AF were randomly divided into ven-tricular rate control group (rate control group, n=67) and sinus rhythm restoration group (cardioversion group, n=67), and received rate- and rhythm-control therapies, respectively. QOL and adverse reaction were evaluated before and 3 months later after treatment. Results Sinus rhythm was restored in 68.65%patients in cardioversion group and 31.34%patients in rate control group after treatment. Al scores were improved significantly in cardioversion group, while only bodily pain and social function were improved significantly in rate control group. There was significant difference of each QOL score between two groups (P<0.05 or 0.01) after treatment. Adverse reactions were not significantly different be-tween two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion Sinus rhythm restoration improves short-term quality of life in patients with previous AF.
