Abstract Objective To investigate the association between peripheric circulating white blood cel count and essential hypertension. Methods 986 subjects (712 female, 274 male) visited our community health centre for a medical check- up were enrolled and divided into hypertensive group (n=457) and control group (n=529). Blood pressure, fasting plasma white blood cel and differential leukocyte counts were measured. Results Total leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte and monocyte counts were significantly higher in hypertensive female patients than in control group (al <0.01). Total leukocyte, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts were positively correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure, respectively, in hypertensive female patients (r=0.152,0.100,0.150,0.119,0.253,0.140,al P<0.05). There was no significant difference of total leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte and monocyte counts between hypertensive male patients and control group. Conclusion Total and differential leukocyte counts are associated with blood pressure in hypertensive female patients.
